The Lincoln County Historical Society is hosting the 250th birthday celebration of the Pownalborough Courthouse this Saturday, September 10, 2011.  Among the activities will be colonial music and games, living history demonstrations, a military drill, the opening of a new trail system, and of course birthday cake.  All the details can be found on the historical society’s webpage.

We’ll be there and boy are we excited!  When my husband and I were at the courthouse back in 2007, they told us to be sure and come back in 2011 for the birthday party.  We’ve tentatively been planning on this for four years now, but when the calendar turned to 2011, we had to figure out if a trip to the East Coast was really and truly possible this year.  Things have fallen into place, and we’re flying to New Hampshire on Wednesday with four children in tow, who are so excited they can hardly stand it!  It’s almost like Christmas.

Sarah Augusta Prescott Goodwin is the daughter of Warren Prescott and Rebecca Johnson.  She married Samuel Randolph Goodwin on Sept. 22, 1852.

Sarah (or Sally) Houdlette Goodwin was born about 1773, the daughter of Louis Houdlette and Mary Cavalier.  She married George Goodwin, son of Samuel Goodwin, Jr., and Ann Frances Goud, on 27 Dec. 1797.  She died 1 Mar. 1850 and is buried in the Old Courthouse Cemetery in Dresden.

He married Lydia Goodwin, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Willard Goodwin, on 13 Nov 1764 in Pownalborough, Lincoln, Maine.  She was born on 11 Apr. 1742 in Charlestown, Massachusetts, and was christened there on 18 Apr. 1742.  She died about July 1812.

They had the following children:

1. Robert Harcourt Twycross born on 17 Oct. 1769.  He died in 1855.  He married Harriot Allen in 1794 in London.  They had six children.
2. Stephen Nymphas Twycross born on 8 Dec. 1773.  He died on 11 May 1841 and is buried in the Old Courthouse Cemetery in Dresden.  He married in 1799 (1) Lydia Johnson his cousin, the daughter of John Johnson and Rebecca Goodwin.  They had three children.  She died 9 Jan 1812. 
   He married (2) Mary Bailey in 1812, also his cousin, the daughter of Nathaniel Bailey and Sarah Goodwin.  They had five children.
3. Joseph Lee Twycross born on 10 Feb. 1776.  He was lost at sea in 1799.
4. Samuel Goodwin Twycross born on 26 Apr. 1778.  He died 20 Jul 1816 by drowning in Charlestown, Massachusetts.  He married Martha Austin 29 Sept. 1803 in Charlestown, Massachusetts.  They had three children.

Abigail Goodwin, the daughter of Major Samuel Goodwin and Elizabeth Willard, was born in October 1746 and died July 11, 1839.  She is buried in the Old Courthouse cemetery in Dresden, Maine.  She was married twice, first to Thomas Johnson in 1776, then to William Goodwin in 1790.

Edward Goodwin was born about 1782, probably in Charlestown, Massachusetts, to Samuel Goodwin Jr. and Ann Frances Goud.  He died 8 Jan. 1862 and is buried in the Old Courthouse cemetery in Dresden, Maine.

George Goodwin, the son of Samuel Goodwin Jr. and Ann Frances Goud was born in 1768, died 26 Apr 1843, and was buried in the Old Courthouse cemetery.  He is the husband of Sarah Houdlette.

They had the following children:

1. Lydia Goodwin, born in 1763, died unmarried 22 June 1841 in Dresden, Maine, and is buried in the Old Courthouse cemetery there.
2. Ann Goodwin, was born 13 Jan 1765 in Pownalborough, Maine.  She married Jonathan Bowman in 1798.
3. Samuel Twycross Goodwin, born 1766, died 10 Jul 1848.  He married Elizabeth Holland on 11 Aug 1792 in Pownalborough.  They had eight children.
4. George Goodwin, born 1768, died 26 Apr 1843 in Dresden, Maine.  He married Sarah, aka Sally, Houdlette on 27 Dec 1797 in Dresden.  They had six children.
5. Charles Goodwin was born about 1770 and drowned before 1790.
6. John Goodwin was born about 1773 and was lost at sea.
7. Sarah Goodwin was born in 1776 and died in 1810.  She married Nathan Hayward on 7 Dec 1809 in Dresden, Maine. 
8. Randolph Goodwin was born about 1779.  His wife’s name was Ann.
9. Edward Goodwin was born in 1782.  He died 8 Jan 1862 and is buried in the Old Courthouse cemetery in Dresden.
10. Benjamin Goodwin was born 26 Apr 1784 in Dresden, Maine.  He died on 14 Mar 1859 in Dresden.  He married Sally Lilly, daughter of Converse Lilly, on 23 Jan 1813 in Dresden.  They had twelve children.
